No fewer than 13 people killed and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a significant expansion of its role in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
