Individuals who experienced sexual abuse by Catholic clergy have voiced fresh optimism after their initial encounter with the new Pope at the Vatican.

Gemma Hickey, who leads Ending Clergy Abuse, stated that the Pope's decision to engage with them so soon in his papacy sent a strong message about his dedication to tackling the problem.

Worldwide Strict Policy Advocated

The organization is pushing for a worldwide strict approach that would permanently remove any clergy member who confesses to or is proven of sexually abusing a child. This approach has already been adopted in the United States.

The Pontiff acknowledged that there is "opposition in some parts of the globe" to this initiative, according to Hickey.

"Everyone was practical when we recognized that there is pushback," Hickey remarked.

Legacy Challenge

The new Pope, who assumed the role in May, has taken on this persistent issue that has plagued the Catholic Church for many years.

Earlier attempts to resolve the situation included an historic summit on child abuse within the institution and changes to church laws to clearly outlaw abuse.

Deeply Felt Connection

For the representative, who uses they/them pronouns, the drive for worldwide adoption of the measure is deeply meaningful. The North American activist revealed they were abused by a priest who was subsequently transferred between various churches.

"We trust this will establish the direction for his leadership, because we want to work with him," they expressed. "We have the common objective, we seek to eliminate abuse by religious officials."

Significant Encounter

Multiple members of the coalition, which represents victims and advocates from more than 30 countries, met with the Pope in his Vatican office.

The discussion, originally scheduled for 20 minutes, lasted to a full hour, during which the religious leader "primarily heard to us," according to the representative.

The pontiff was described as "very understanding" when listening to the story of a female survivor victimized at a church-run institution for Indigenous children in Canada.

They added the leader was "tender" about their own story and seemed "modest, humorous, and approachable."

"Survivors have consistently sought a voice in discussions and I didn't perceive like he was giving us lip service," they commented. "I felt like he was genuine, realistic, and receptive and eager to work with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The group is hoping that changes to church regulations will enable the adoption of the strict approach worldwide.

They have spoken with experts and gathered materials that they plan to submit to Pope Leo.

"He appeared interested in reviewing it," Hickey remarked.

Accountability Highlighted

A recent Vatican-commissioned report emphasized the "importance of a streamlined protocol for the resignation and/or dismissal of Church leaders or personnel in cases of abuse or failure to act."

The document also noted that victims consistently emphasized the "critical requirement for bishops and senior officials to be made responsible for negligence and concealment."

Path Ahead

The representative revealed they told the pontiff at the start of their discussion: "This is as much a challenge for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

After the encounter, they voiced optimism for future change.

"We realise it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the conclusion, uniting and building a connection and persisting to build that relationship is a step in the right direction," they stated.

They concluded that they told with the pontiff: "Just because it's a difficult period, I feel like we can alter how the story ends - he appreciated that."
